Armed robber aborts heist of Haverhill restaurant

HAVERHILL — Police said a man armed with a gun walked out of the Peking Garden Restaurant, at 159 Winter St. empty-handed last night.

"A guy came in and brandished a handgun, demanding money," Haverhill police Lt. Joseph Florent said.

But the suspect apparently was distracted by another person in the restaurant.

"The clerk ran out of the restaurant to call police and the guy (with the gun) fled," Lt. Florent said. The incident occurred at 6:08 p.m.
