Library closed for Labor Day weekend

The public library will be closed tomorrow through Monday for the Labor Day weekend.

The library will reopen on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Visit the library online at www.haverhillpl.org.

Animal Kingdom Day at Winnekenni Castle Sunday

Winnekenni Castle will host a free Animal Kingdom Day for children and families on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event will feature the McDonney Farm Petting Zoo and pony rides. Admission is free, but donations to the castle’s Wishing Well are appreciated. A craft fair and flea market will be held as well. Visit online at www.winnekenni.com.

Haverhill Cultural Council seeks grant applications

The Haverhill Cultural Council is accepting grant applications that support cultural activities in the community.

Applications from organizations, schools and individuals must be postmarked by Oct.15. A grant writing workshop will be held on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. Applicants are encouraged to attend this workshop.

Cultural Council grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Haverhill, including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

This year, the Haverhill Cultural Council will distribute more than $20,000 in grants. Previously-funded projects include: A Kafka Fragments Concert at the public library, a four-day overnight science camp for middle school students, an experimental film festival, a public mural along the Bradford Rail Trail, The Columbian Cultural Committee Festival, music by at the Haverhill Farmers Market and the life of a butterfly presented to elementary students.

The Haverhill Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.
