Police seek 2 suspects in Haverhill beating

One suspect already in custody

HAVERHILL — A city man is being held without bail on assault charges in connection with the beating of another man, who police said suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police said the victim, whose name is not being released, appeared to have been the target of an unprovoked attack by three men. The incident happened at about 2 p.m. on Friday in an area off Winter Street, close to Little River.

Police charged Rodney McCray, 21, of 13 Dudley St., with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, disorderly conduct and witness intimidation. He will be arraigned on Tuesday in Haverhill District Court.

Police said the victim was initially transported to Merrimack Valley Hospital then flown to a Boston hospital. No update on the victim’s condition was available at press time.

Police spokeman Lt. Robert Pistone said that because the victim sustained life-threatening injuries, the State Police were called to help with processing the crime scene on Winter Street along with State Police Investigators assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Pistone said Haverhill police are seeking two others involved in the assault, but he was not able to release their names or photographs. The matter remains under investigation by Haverhill police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office.

Any one with information about what occurred should contact Haverhill Police Detective Meaghan Buckley at 978-373-1212.
