GROVELAND — Residents voted to spend nearly $5 million to buy 163 acres last night, much of which will be left as open space.
Voters at the annual Town Meeting took up 29 articles, including buying three large tracts of land. They also voted to seek the state’s permission to expand its Board of Selectmen from three to five members.
The largest land purchase was 61 acres at 150 Center St. at a cost of $3.7 million. The land will be paid for through a debt exclusion which means the average homeowner will see a $122.17 tax increase each year for the life of the 20-year loan. The other two tracts — 54 acres on Dewhirst Street at $935,000 and 48 acres known as the Center Street Greenway Parcel at $510,000 — will be paid for mostly through the town’s Community Preservation Act.
