HAVERHILL — Police are looking for a masked man who was carrying a gun when he robbed the Red Hen Pantry on River Street.
The man got away with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
After police responded to a 911 call from the store clerk, they searched the area but were unable to find the man. The robbery happened about 5:30 a.m. Friday.
The convenience store is at 56 River St., a short distance from the north side of the Comeau Bridge and close to downtown.
Police Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said the clerk told officers that he was in the store cooler stacking shelves when a customer walked in. The clerk said he walked out of the cooler and saw a man wearing a black hoodie and a mask, according to police.
“The suspect waved the clerk over to him with a black, semi-automatic handgun,” Thompson said. “The suspect then ordered the clerk to empty the cash drawers.”
Thompson said the suspect then fled the store with an undermined amount of cash and was last observed running towards Washington Street.
Thompson said the clerk described the man as being about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 190 pounds.
