Biker killed in crash

Identity of motorcyclist unknown, police say

LAWRENCE — A man died of serious injuries last night after his motorcycle collided with a taxi cab at the intersection of Park and Bennington streets, police said.

Even as investigators received word from Massachusetts General Hospital shortly after 9 p.m. that the man had not survived the crash, police were having trouble identifying the victim, according to police Chief John Romero.

“We can’t even notify next of kin yet because we don’t know who it is,” Romero said late last night.

“There’s been some confusion around the man’s identity,” he said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. in a residential area in the city’s Arlington neighborhood, about a block from the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center at 150 Park St.

The motorcycle appeared to be headed west on Park Street when a yellow Popular Taxi, moving south out of Bennington Street, collided with the motorcycle, police said. There is a stop sign on Bennington Street for southbound traffic entering Park Street.

“The motorcycle driver was propelled toward the front of the taxi cab and suffered serious trauma as a result,” Romero said.

“Given the seriousness of his injuries, we requested the state police accident reconstruction team,’’ Romero said. “Unfortunately, he did not survive.’’

As of press time, no charges had been filed in connection with the crash, which remained under investigation by Lawrence police, the state police accident reconstruction team and state police detectives assigned to Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for the district attorney.

Auxiliary Police Chief Jay Jackson and seven members of his volunteer force were called in to block off several streets in the area, so the accident reconstruction team could conduct its investigation. Dozens of area residents and spectators crowded around the intersection, which was rimmed with yellow crime scene tape. A black helmet was on the ground near the motorcycle, which was on its side.
