LAWRENCE — A 25-year-old woman walked into a Water Street hair salon with two over-the-counter pregnancy tests and a note from her doctor, all confirming she is with child.
Police said the woman confronted the 30-year-old salon owner, waved the doctor's note in her face, and told her she was pregnant by a man who also has children with the salon owner.
Police said the salon owner told them the woman then assaulted her.
When police arrived they found the salon owner waiting outside, and the younger woman inside, sitting on the floor crying.
The younger woman told police she called the man to tell him she was pregnant and was ignored by him, so she decided to go to the salon and tell the owner of the situation.
She told police the salon owner took the paper out of her hand and assaulted her, police said.
Meanwhile, the man at the center of the dispute arrived at the salon. He told police he had received a phone call from the younger woman telling him she was pregnant. He told police he told her he was sorry but that he did not want to go back with her and was trying to work things out with the salon owner with whom he has children.
Fearing a fight might occur, the man told police he went to the salon to prevent any violence.
The man told police he stepped between the two women to separate them and a hand flew by his face and the fight broke out. He told police he did not know who threw the first punch.
Police said both women suffered minor injuries, and the younger woman was taken to Lawrence General Hospital by Patriot Ambulance to be checked out.
The incident occurred Wednesday about 7:17 p.m., police said.
No charges were filed in the case, police said.
