HAVERHILL — Police from Massachusetts and New Hampshire are on high alert this morning, searching for a couple wanted in connection with a horrific child abuse case in Plaistow.
Channel 5 is reporting this morning that Haverhill police surrounded a house on Nichols Street yesterday in a search for the mother of the three-year-old, Jessica Linscott, 23, of 197 Main St., Plaistow, and her boyfriend, Roland Dow, 27, same address.
According to the televised report, based on a tip Haverhill police surrounded the house and searched the building but came up empty-handed.
Haverhill police confirmed this morning that there was an investigation on Nichols Street at 1 p.m. yesterday. Additional details were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, police in Swampscott got a tip from Plaistow police yesterday at 3:30 p.m. that someone from Swampscott had seen the couple.
Swampscott police sent out an alert to their cars to be on the lookout for the wanted couple, said Officer Saverio Caruso.
"Somebody in our area reported to Plaistow they thought they saw someone in Swampscott that resembled the couple," he said. "We gave that information to the cars on the street to be on the heads-up. Nothing has turned up."
He added, "They've gotten calls from all over. Hopefully they do surface."
Plaistow police said this morning that the search is continuing.
Plaistow police received a call a week ago from Exeter Hospital saying a child with significant head injuries was admitted there and suffered massive bruises and burns.
The couple told doctors the injury was self-inflicted, but doctors concluded that was not the case. An arrest warrant was issued Friday. The child is now at Lebanon Hitchcock Children’s Hospital, where he is expected to stay for the foreseeable future, police said. The child's grandmother is staying with the child at the hospital, police said.
The two adults are wanted on multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police said they plan to upgrade the charges to first-degree assault with help from the county attorney’s office.
Rockingham County Attorney James Reams plans to hold a press conference today to urge the couple to turn themselves in.
