Haverhill man charged with purse theft

MANCHESTER — At 1 p.m. Friday, police arrested Rafael Mena, a 38-year-old Haverhill resident, after receiving a call about a stolen purse.

Police first responded to a Beach Street caller, who said her purse had been stolen. She gave a description of the thief’s vehicle, a 1999 brown Oldsmobile Alero. Police soon caught up with an Alero, driven by Mena, on Route 128 south, near exit 16.

Mena is charged with attempting to commit a crime, speeding, operating a motor vehicle with reckless endangerment, and possession of burglary tools.

Mena’s personal recognizance bail was set at $5,000. He was trying to raise the bail last evening.
