Brightside open house Saturday

Haverhill's Brightside Inc. invites the public to an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 205, City Hall, 4 Summer St. Refreshments will be served. Brightside, which has reorganized this year, is looking for volunteers to help with community beautification projects. During the open house, Brightside officials will outline some of those projects, including Bloomfest on Oct. 24, when 3,500 daffodil bulbs will be planted along the front brick wall of the stadium on Lincoln Avenue. You can adopt a bulb for $1, six for $5 or volunteer to help. Brightside also will unveil its new Internet site. Brightside officers are: Douglas Edison, president; David Carter, vice president; Heather Budrewicz, secretary; and Britta Anderson, treasurer. Brightside's board of directors: Elaine Barker, Christine Hardiman, Shawn Linderman, Paul MacDonald and Denise Johnson.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy event set

Join the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy at "Beat Duchenne" on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Saugus-Everett Elks, 401 Main St., Saugus. Along with live music by the Acme Music Trio and Acoustic Outrage, there will be food, children's activities, raffles and an auction featuring a week's stay at a timeshare in Kissimee, Fla., and one in Las Vegas. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Jett Foundation founded by Christine McSherry after her son Jett was diagnosed with DMD in 2001. The foundation supports a multidisiplinary clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital and cutting edge research for new treatments and finding a cure for DMD. Democratic City Committee to meet

The Haverhill Democratic City Committee meets Monday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Haverhill Public Library auditorium, 99 Main St. Topics of discussion will include activities for the Dec. 8 primary for the open U.S. Senate seat. Bradford ski team invites new members

The Bradford ski team is now accepting registrations for the 2009-2010 season. This youth alpine race team competes in the Eastern Mass Buddy Werner League. The program is open to children of all ages through high school age who can ski. Coaches will teach the fundamentals of the sport. No racing experience is necessary.

Practices are held weeknights at Ski Bradford in the Bradford section of Haverhill. The season starts with the first snowfall in mid- to late December, and racing runs January through March on Sunday mornings. Registration is open online from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30. Haverhill Little League to elect board

Haverhill Little League Baseball will meet Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the AmVets on Primrose Street to elect its board of directors for the 2010 season. Only those members in good standing will be eligible to vote, but all are welcome to attend.

BSO trip planned for Nov. 12

Haverhill's Council on Aging will host a trip to the Boston Symphony Orchestra rehearsal on Nov. 12. Fabio Luisis will conduct works by Honegger, Saint-Saens and Stravinsky. This trip is open to all age groups. Seating is limited.

Safe at Home program

Haverhill's Council on Aging, in partnership with Rebuilding Together Haverhill, will present a Safe at Home program on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. in Room 22 of the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. Receive a program checklist to make sure your home is safe and learn how to apply for free home repair services. Falls account for 60 percent of injury-related deaths among seniors, with 78 percent of falls occurring either inside or near the home.
