'Lunch lady' forges tradition at Walnut Square School

HAVERHILL — Eileen Chapman is more than the "lunch lady" at the Walnut Square School.

She's also the one who coordinates the annual food drive at Thanksgiving time. The drive has students in kindergarten through second grade donating canned goods, money and gift cards so that families in need can have a holiday dinner.

Chapman is planning to buy at least 20 turkeys this year, as well.

"Too many people can't sit down to a Thanksgiving dinner," she said when asked why she does this each year.

Everything is stored in the school cafeteria until the Salvation Army comes and picks it up, she said.

She started the food drive with her mother, Melva Medigan, years ago when the two worked side-by-side in the kitchen at Walnut Square.

"This is my 20th year," Chapman said. "I look forward to it each year."
