Galzerano to go on trial for alleged handgun threats

GROVELAND — After numerous continuances, Paul Galzerano, charged with threatening two neighbors with a handgun two summers ago, is scheduled to go on trial Tuesday in Haverhill District Court.

Galzerano, 57, of 281 Main St., will be tried before a six-member jury on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime.

Police allege Galzerano threatened two women who live near him on the evening of Aug. 4, 2008, after they approached him in his backyard and asked him to lower the volume on the music he was playing.

The two women, in their 50s, told police Galzerano pointed a black handgun at them and threatened to "take care" of them, police said.

Meanwhile, the state attorney general's office is investigating receiving stolen property charges against Galzerano in an unrelated case, according to police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Gillen.

It was Galzerano's arrest on the gun charges that led to his being charged with receiving property reported stolen from Beverly Hospital.

When Patrolman James Morton searched Galzerano's house after the incident with his neighbors, his attention was drawn to an antique grandfather clock as well as several paintings.

Morton did not find the handgun he was looking for, but he discovered thousands of dollars worth of goods that matched items stolen from Beverly Hospital, police said.

A few weeks later, a group of Beverly Hospital executives met with Morton and other Groveland police officers to talk about the items stolen from that facility. Morton made the connection and applied for a warrant to search Galzerano's house, this time for the clock, paintings and antiques missing from Beverly Hospital.

After the search, police arrested Galzerano and charged him with six counts of receiving stolen property.

In January, the attorney general's office took over the investigation from the Essex County district attorney's office, according to Gillen.

Representatives of the attorney general's office have told The Eagle-Tribune that they do not comment on cases under investigation.

Galzerano was employed as an associate vice president at Beverly Hospital from August 2002 until June 2007, according to documents filed at Haverhill District Court in connection with the weapons charges.

He received severance payments until Dec. 15, 2007.

He is represented by attorney Scott Gleason.
