Local woman chosen for journalism program

Julie Varney, editor of Northern Essex Community College's student newspaper, the NECC Observer, is heading to a prestigious journalism program.

Varney, of Methuen, was one of 75 students nationwide to receive a full scholarship to the Campus Coverage Project, a three-day campus investigative reporting workshop.

She also will participate in a yearlong program offering training and opportunities to learn from top reporters throughout the country.

The Campus Coverage Project will be at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University next month.

Varney also writes for the Haverhill Gazette, a sister publication of The Eagle-Tribune.

Origamido featured in PBS broadcast

Haverhill's Origamido Studio will be featured in a PBS "Independent Lens" broadcast of "Between the Folds," airing Sunday at 10 p.m. on WGBX-44.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal introduces the film with clips of Haverhill's Michael LaFosse folding a handmade paper butterfly.

The film begins at the former Origamido Studio on Wingate Street.

Planned as a seven-minute short film, it became a one hour, award-winning, inspirational art film about math, engineering and science.

Several local Ph.D.s: Tom Hull, Erik Demaine, Jeannine Mosely, Brian Chan and other super-complex origami designers that work with Origamido's Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander are featured.

Origamido is holding classes this month at Angles & Art, 80 Wingate St.

Donations of winter coats sought

While schools and corporate partners have been busy collecting coats for Anton's Cleaners' Coats for Kids drive, more coats are still needed to meet the demand, organizers said.

All types of coats — infant, children and adult — can be donated through Jan. 9.

Since it began in 1995, Coats for Kids has distributed more than 550,000 coats. Last year, nearly 65,000 coats were collected, including many through the corporate partners and school program.

"Our wish is that everyone remembers there are many people out there who want nothing more than to receive the gift of warmth this holiday season,'' said Charles A. Anton, president of Anton's Cleaners. "We hope if you receive a new coat for the holidays, or purchase one for your children, that you drop off the old ones at any of our 44 stores or at Jordan's Furniture."

Anton's reminds everyone that more coats are needed to reach its goal of collecting 60,000 coats that will be cleaned by Anton's at no charge. Following cleaning, Coats for Kids' distribution partners, such as Massachusetts Community Action Programs, Salvation Army, Cradles to Crayons, BUMC: Outreach Van Project, and Catholic Charities, among others, will ensure that coats get to those who cannot afford one during the cold weather months.

More information is available at antons.com/cfk or by calling the Coats for Kids hot line at 800-659-0069.
