Driving instructor in critical condition

Methuen man hurt in Haverhill crash

HAVERHILL — A 37-year-old driving instructor from Methuen is in critical condition after his student driver lost control of their car and hit the plow of a pickup truck, police said.

Keith Levesque of 14 Avon Ave. was airlifted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston after the crash at 12:05 p.m. Saturday. Levesque was in a Toyota driven by a female student driver when the vehicle went out of control on Amesbury Line Road, Deputy police Chief Donald Thompson said.

The southbound Toyota hit the snowplow blade of a privately owned Ford pickup traveling north toward Route 110, police said.

The crash happened near the entrance to Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Levesque was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, and then flown by helicopter to Tufts, where he remained in critical condition last night.

The driver of the truck was Michael Sullivan, 57, of Haverhill, police said. He and the student driver received minor injuries, police said.

All three people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, police said.

Police withheld the student driver's name. Rescue workers extricated Levesque from the car, police said.

The name of the driving school was not immediately available from police because it was not listed on the report filled out by officers at the scene.

When asked to comment on a student driver being behind the wheel of a car when snow had fallen, Thompson said the roads in Haverhill appeared safe to him at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed, Thompson said. He said Haverhill safety Officer Edward Watson and state police are investigating.

The truck was not plowing at the time of the crash, police said.

Attempts to reach Levesque's family were unsuccessful last night.
