HAVERHILL — A driving instructor, who is in critical condition after his student lost control of their car, works for a school in downtown Haverhill.
Keith Levesque, 37, of 14 Avon Ave., Methuen, is an instructor for MV Auto School, 44 Merrimack St., police said.
When asked about the accident yesterday by The Eagle-Tribune, school owner Steve Hoffman refused to comment.
"I'd rather not talk about it,'' he said.
No charges have been filed in the incident, which happened at 12:05 p.m. Saturday when a female student taking a driving lesson with Levesque lost control of their Toyota, police said. The car crashed into the snow plow blade of a pickup truck on Amesbury Line Road, leaving Levesque critical in Tufts New England Medical Center and causing relatively minor injuries to the female student and the driver of the truck — Michael Sullivan, 57 of Haverhill, police said.
Local and state police are investigating. A spokeswoman for the registry of Motor Vehicles told The Eagle-Tribune yesterday it is possible the Registry may do its own investigation since a driving school is involved. Spokeswoman Ann Dufresne said the state exercises "extensive oversight" of driving schools.
Several inches of snow had fallen earlier, but Deputy police Chief Donald Thompson said the roads appeared to be safe when the crash occurred.
Haverhill police are withholding the name of the student.
Levesque, sitting in the passenger seat of the Toyota, was extricated from the vehicle by rescue workers. He was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, then airlifted to the Boston hospital.
According to the city clerk's office, a business certificate was issued to MV Auto School on May 20, 2005.
A driving school license issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles is visible through the window of the school's Merrimack Street address. The school offers instruction by appointment.
