Driver killed in Interstate 93 crash

SALEM, N.H. — An unidentified driver was killed tonight when a pickup truck crashed into a guardrail on the southbound side of Interstate 93.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Salem fire Capt. John Brackett. The crash, which happened between Exit 1 and the Massachusetts state line, was reported at 7:19 p.m., he said.

The truck rolled over after crashing into the guardrail, Brackett said. The vehicle was "completely destroyed," he said. The accident caused a massive traffic jam. Despite the fact that police posted information on electronic highway message boards warning drivers about the crash and that the left two lanes would be closed as they approached the crash scene, drivers continued using the entire width of the highway, some cars even travelling in the breakdown lane.

That led to a large traffic jam as drivers got closer to the location of the crash, where all cars were forced into a single lane. The pickup truck was being removed from the scene as drivers crept past it at 8:30 p.m. No other details were available initially from police.
