Kathleen Gemmell of Haverhill was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Letters About Literature program from the Massachusetts Center for the Book at an awards ceremony at the State House. She earned recognition for her letter to Elie Wiesel about "Night."

Hannah Duston Healthcare Center resident Elise (Doucette) Comeau turned 100 years old on March 21, 2009. A surprise party was given by her daughters, Doris Sulesky and Shirley Hardy, in the activities room of the Hannah Duston center in Haverhill. Residents and many members of Elise's family joined in the celebration. At her birthday celebration, Jean Diamontopoulos, activities director, presented Elise with a 100-bead necklace with hearts representing each year of her life, separated by a pearl for each year of blessings which she proudly displays on her bulletin board.

Pfc. Daniel Gauthier of Delta Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery "Devil Dawg Unit D" has completed basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He was accepted into the Army's medic training program in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Laurie Gauthier of Gardner and Robert Gauthier of Bradford. His grandmother is Geraldine Rydle of Lawrence.

The following Haverhill residents have been named to the dean's list for the winter/spring 2009 term at Springfield College — Susan Warcewicz, Michael DeMellia, Aimee Doe, Katie Stanley, Jyovani Joubert, Meghan Feran.

The following Haverhill residents were named to the spring semester 2009 dean's list at Northeastern University — Christine Fitzpatrick, Rosmery Rosario, Thomas J. Cody, Matthew J. Lesiczka, Alicia Picard, Stephanie L. Pratti, Elyse J. Poor.

Haverhill resident Moises Carrasco participated in this summer's Boston University Tanglewood Institute, a program of musical study and performance for high school students. Carrasco¬ has studied double bass for six years.¬ He is the son of Moises and Judith Carrasco.

Guy Anthony Leva III has recently joined the Army. Leva graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and is now stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. He is trained as a combat engineer. Leva was a 2004 graduate of Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School and a 2008 graduate of Northern Essex Community College, where he studied sports medicine. Both schools are in Haverhill. He is the son of Guy and Leslie Leva Sr., and the brother of Michelle and Ashley Leva. An Eagle-Tribune carrier for years, he was named Eagle-Tribune Carrier of the Year.
