---- — HAVERHILL — A man was shot in the head Friday night in what appears to be a drive-by shooting — the latest in a series of violent crimes that have plagued the Acre in recent weeks.
Haverhill police responded to the area of 8th Avenue at Cedar Street shortly after 6 p.m. for a report of a disturbance involving a firearm and a shooting victim, according to Detective Lt. Robert Pistone. Witnesses saw two men, possibly in their early 20s, flee the scene.
Pistone released few details about the incident, including the victim’s identity and the severity of his wound.
But the victim’s injuries are considered “non-fatal,” according to Carrie Kimball Monahan, a spokeswoman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office. Kimball-Monahan deferred questions about the shooting to Haverhill Police. Police officials did not respond to numerous calls yesterday
Haverhill police issued a bulletin to area police agencies Friday night to be on the look out for a white, older model Volvo with a sun roof that has been linked to the shooting.
Meanwhile, State Police joined the Haverhill Police Detective Unit in the investigation of the shooting. Pistone sought the public’s help in solving the crime. He asked that anyone who may have witnessed the crime to contact Haverhill Police at 978-373-1212, where they can leave an anonymous tip.
It’s been a violent month in the Acre, an inner-city neighborhood that’s been troubled by crime over the years. The intersection of Cedar and 8th Avenue is four blocks north of a deadly shooting several years ago in an apartment on Franklin Street. The shooter, Jose Collazo, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
On Jan. 13, a woman walking on Cedar Street at night with her 2-year-old baby in a carriage told police she was was robbed at knifepoint by a young man in a hoodie who snatched her purse and ran away. The woman told police the man approached her from behind and asked her for directions before pulling out a knife and demanding her purse.
A woman and two men from Lawrence told police they got robbed at gunpoint on Jan. 15 on 5th Avenue, which is four blocks south of 8th Avenue and also connects with Cedar Street. They said they were looking at an apartment and got into their car to leave when two men approached. One had a gun and demanded their money.
Police said one of the victims told the gunman that he didn’t have any money, and was then struck in the face with the gun. The gunman then reached into the car and searched the man’s pockets. The robbers took two iPhones, a purse and a wallet from the victims then fled on foot in the direction of Franklin Street.
