Prominent lawyer recovering from heart attack

Scott Gleason collapsed while training for Boston Marathon

HAVERHILL — Scott Gleason, a well-known Haverhill attorney who has defended some of the area’s high-profile political figures, is recovering in a Boston hospital after suffering a heart attack.

He was stricken Sunday while running near his home in Bradford, said his brother Thomas Gleason.

Thomas Gleason said an off-duty nurse helped revive his brother at the scene. She received help from emergency responders, he said.

“Everyone who responded did a wonderful job and we’re all very grateful,” said Thomas Gleason, who is also a local lawyer. “We’ve had positive signs at the hospital and we are hoping he’s back on his feet soon.”

Thomas Gleason said his brother was training to run in this year’s Boston Marathon in April and added “maybe he still will.”

Scott Gleason is being treated at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, his brother said.

Gleason, 62, has practiced law since 1980 and has a law office on Merrimack Street with brothers Thomas and Sean. Scott Gleason is known for having a heavy workload and representing public officials in high-profile corruption cases.

Some of his notable current and former clients include former Haverhill Highway Department Superintendent James Flaherty, former Lawrence School Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy and his son Wilfredo Laboy II, former Lawrence public works chief Frank McCann and former Beverly Hospital administrator Paul Galzerano.

In his most recent high-profile case, Gleason defended Heather Paltinavich of Haverhill, who was found not guilty last month in Essex County Superior Court of two counts of statutory rape of a 12-year-old boy.
