Man rescued from Merrimack River after fall

HAVERHILL — A man fishing from a flood wall behind Water Street fell about 4 feet onto some rocks in the Merrimack River yesterday, just south of the fire department.

Local boaters called for help, and Rescue 1 and Engine 3 responded — launching a boat at the Crescent City Yacht Club to rescue the man.

They couldn’t launch the rescue boat from their own fire station because that dock had been washed away in a flood two years ago, and hasn’t been replaced.

“The rescue went smoothly; we got it done,” said Deputy Douglas Brown.

The man suffered a head injury, as well as several cuts and bruises, Brown said.

“He was unable to say how or why he fell,” explained Brown, who was unable to release the man’s name as of press time.

Paramedics took the man to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment.

“He was banged up,” Brown said. “I think he’s going to be OK, but I don’t know. He looked pretty hurt.”
