HAVERHILL — As of noon today, 4,000 homes and busineses in the city were without power due to Hurricane Sandy.
Mayor James Fiorentini said a representative from National Grid visited his office this morning to give up an update on how repairs are going.
"I've received a few emails that they don't have crews in Haverhill, but they do," Fiorentini said. "We want our residents back online as soon as possible."
The city opened schools today, despite many homes being without power.
The storm knocked out power to than 5,700 National Grid customers in Haverhill on Monday. The hardest hit were the outlying and more heavily wooded areas of the city, including Ayers Village at the western end of town, North Broadway and a stretch of Lake Street as well as the Pilgrim Road area off Broadway near Lafayette Square. At the eastern end of the city, many residents in Rocks Village and East Broadway are still without power, as well as residents in the Corliss Hill Road are and sections of Bradford, including a portion of Ward Hill.
RiversEdge Plaza next to Trinity Stadium lost power yesterday afternoon and as of noon today businesses there were still without power.
Fiorentini said the city was spared the worst of the storm and that clean up operations began this morning. City workers are removing smaller downed trees, limbs and branches, while National Grid crews are in Haverhill working on the remaining outages. Fiorentini said that although National Grid is focusing on other towns that were harder hit by the storm, they are sending crews to Haverhill and he is being informed of their progress.
Haverhill District Court had a delayed noontime opening today. Residents can drop off tree debris at no charge at the Highway Department yard on Primrose Street today through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Leaves will not be accepted. The city will hold its annual leaf collection day on Dec. 1.
