---- — HAVERHILL — Robert Scatamacchia assumed the presidency of the City Council last night.
Former President John Michitson resigned the presidency at the meeting for work-related reasons.
Michitson, an electrical engineer, told his colleagues he has taken a new position at the Bedford-based MITRE Corporation that involves a heavy travel schedule. Michitson said he intends to finish his current term, which has a little more than a year left, but probably will not seek re-election.
By virtue of his second place finish in the most recent election, Scatamacchia had been the council vice president. Under council rules, the vice president is bumped up if the president resigns.
Councilors then elected Michael Hart, 9-0, to replace Scatamacchia as vice president. Hart is former president and received the third most votes in the last election.
