Train riders will have to take bus next month

Bus service to replace trains between Haverhill and Reading, Feb. 8 to 13

Train riders in Haverhill, Lawrence and Andover will be making part of their commute to Boston and back by bus for several days next month as the MBTA begins rehabilitating the Shawsheen River railroad bridge in Andover.

The switch from trains to buses on non-peak runs begins Friday, Feb. 8 and ends Wednesday, Feb. 13, according to a press release put out by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company. The rail shutdown will affect several runs from Haverhill to Boston and Boston to Haverhill in the mid-morning, early-afternoon and late-night hours.

On several trains Feb. 8, 9 and 10, weekend passengers from Lawrence, Haverhill’s downtown and Bradford stations and Andover’s downtown and Ballardvale stations, along with riders in North Wilmington, will be bused directly to Boston’s North Station. There will also be sporadic bus service between those stations.

On Feb. 11, 12 and 13, weekday passengers from those stations will also be bused directly to Boston.

On the return from Boston on those days, some passengers will be bused from Reading to Haverhill and stations in between, according to the press release. Riders between Reading and Boston won’t be affected by the bridge work and temporary bus schedule, the release said.

The press release said riders should expect delays during bus connections and to check MBTA.com for more information and updates.
