Caribbean Escape slated for March 1

---- — The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce with co-organizer Nunan Florist & Greenhouses will host a “Caribbean Escape” event March 1 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Nunan’s greenhouse, 269 Central St., Georgetown.

The heated greenhouse will become a tropical paradise. Nunan’s home-grown tropical plants, waterfall vignettes and chatty Macaw will give the illusion of paradise, and they’ll turn up the heat so it feels you are on a vacation on a tropical island.

A live DJ will provide Caribbean-themed music, including reggae and Jimmy Buffet favorites. Tropical hors d’oeuvres including shrimp, jerk chicken, plantains and more are included along with music, dancing, light food and a scenic venue.

Guests will receive one complimentary drink, included in the ticket price. A specialty tropical-themed drink will be provided by Hammer & Sickle Vodka. Dress in tropical attire, as best costume will be awarded.

The event will also feature a scavenger hunt and limbo competition. Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win several raffle prizes.

Poet to speak during White Fund Lecture

Mayda del Valle, acclaimed poet and spoken word artist, will present a White Fund Lecture titled “The Passion of Poetry and the Power of Artistic Expression” March 7, from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at Lawrence High School, 70-72 North Parish Road.

This event is free and open to the public and will be held in partnership with Northern Essex Community College. Funded by a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics.

Art lessons at the public library

Local artist Sharon Silverman is partnering with the public library to teach teens ages 12 to 18 graffiti, word and book arts. The class will be held March 9 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Supplies will be provided. This program is in conjunction with the Tweens and Teens grant with funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Library to celebrate Teen Tech Week

The public library will host a celebration of digital literacy and technology March 11 to 15. Teens ages 12 to 18 are invited to take part in fun tech programs.

An Old School Tech Museum in the Teen Zone is March 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. Video games are in the Milhendler Room March 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. Build Your own Art Bot robot in the Teen Zone is March 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. Search Engine Trivia Madness is March 15 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Celebrity impersonator show at the library

A group of Haverhill High School students will impersonate a variety of celebrities when they perform March 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the auditorium on the second floor of the public library, 99 Main St.

This event was postponed from Feb. 9 due to the weather. The show is free and open to all Haverhill residents over the age of 12. Enjoy an array of “star” performances in a two hour show featuring students impersonating a variety of celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Brittany Spears and others.

Road race/walk announced

first Fairy Tale Ball

On April 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the public library will open its doors to fairy princesses, knights in shining armor and dragons.
