Haverhill man charged in Walmart sex assault

PLAISTOW - Police last night arrested Ronald Beausoleil, 33, of Haverhill, Mass., in connection with the sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl in Walmart Sunday.

Beausoleil, of 972 Amesbury Road, is charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault, shoplifting and operating after suspension. He is a Level 3 sex offender, according to the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry.

The truck he was believed to have driven from the scene was spotted in the Walmart parking lot at 8:38 yesterday evening by Deputy Sheriff Matthew Caracciolo. Beausoleil was identified as the suspect in the assault on a 9-year-old girl in the store's toy department.

He was held in the county jail on $25,000 cash and was arraigned this morning in Salem (N.H.) District Court by video from the Rockingham County Jail. He is being held until a probable cause hearing on March 18 in Plaistow District Court.

According to court papers and Plaistow Deputy police Chief Kathleen Jones, the girl, who had become separated from her parent, reported to a store employee that a man approached and touched her "privates" while she was in the toy aisle. She was not physically injured.

She was able to describe the suspect to police. Store surveillance cameras captured his image and that of the pickup truck he left the parking lot in.

According to Plaistow police prosecutor Jill Cook, Beausoleil was convicted in June 1999 in Grafton Superior Court in New Hampshire on charges of felonious sexual assault on a child under 14. He was sentenced to two to four years in state prison on that charge. In addition, he was convicted on a theft charge from June 22, 1999, for which he got two to four years in state prison, Cook said.

He has charges pending or has been convicted of crimes in other communities and states as well, including in Haverhill, Mass., and New York state.
