HAVERHILL — It's unlikely to be a coincidence, police said.
Someone stole the hood from a silver 2003 Honda Civic parked outside a home on Old Ferry Road. The same night, someone stole the bumper from another silver 2003 Honda Civic parked outside another home on Old Ferry Road.
Police said it's likely thieves, who needed the parts to rebuild the same kind of car, noticed the two Civics and decided to steal the parts.
In the first theft, a resident of Old Ferry Road told police that when he looked out his window at 8:30 Monday morning, he saw that the hood of his Honda Civic was gone. He said he parked the car in his driveway at 11 the previous night.
At 9:46 p.m., police went to an apartment complex, also on Old Ferry Road, where a woman said the front bumper of her car, also a silver 2003 Honda Civic, was removed from the vehicle. She said she had parked her car at 7 p.m. the previous day.
Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said it's likely the two thefts are connected. The thieves might have been driving around looking for spare parts, or perhaps they were aware that a couple of cars on Old Ferry Road had the parts they were seeking, he said.
The thieves may be rebuilding a Honda Civic that had damage to its hood and bumper.
Such blatant incidents of parts being stolen right off a vehicle occasionally happen in Haverhill, Thompson said.
"We get this sort of thing from time to time," he said.
Detectives are investigating.
Anyone with information about them is asked to call police Capt. Alan Ratte, head of detectives, at 978-373-1212, ext. 503.
