HAVERHILL — A two-story house was damaged yesterday by a fire that is believed to have started on a second-floor porch.
No one was reported injured and firefighters extinguished the flames after receiving a 911 call at 4:09 p.m. of a report of a fire at 4 Arch Place.
Fire Chief Richard Borden said the second floor living space may have to be closed off as there was some water and smoke damage, along with charring on the exterior in the area of the back porch, which cannot be seen from the street.
"They did a really good job knocking it down quickly, even before I got here," Borden said while firefighters from the High Street station, Central Station on Water Street and Bradford Station conducted clean-up operations. "Any time you get in and do the job right away, it lessens the damage."
Arch Place is off Arch Street in the city's Mount Washington neighborhood. The street is just up the hill from the commuter rail station in Railroad Square.
Broadway resident Brian Woodworth, 39, said he was driving on Essex Street when he saw smoke billowing into the sky. He parked his car and walked up to Arch Street to see what was happening.
"Firefighters did a really good job," Woodworth said. "I had a friend who lived on the second floor of that house years ago."
