HAVERHILL — The Essex District Attorney's Office released more information this morning regarding the unexpected death on Sunday of a 2-year-old girl in Haverhill.
Carrie Kimball-Monahan, director of communications for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, said that on Sunday afternoon, after putting the girl down for a nap, her father found her unresponsive in her bed.
Kimball-Monahan said EMTs responded to a 911 call and transported the girl to Merrimack Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.
Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Essex District Attorney's Office and Haverhill police are investigating. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death, which typically can take months to complete, Kimball-Monahan said.
Kimball-Monahan said it is protocol for the Essex District Attorney's Office to conduct a comprehensive investigation for every sudden or unattended death within the county.
"The goal of the investigation is to determine the facts and circumstances of the fatality and ultimately decide whether criminal charges are warranted," she said.
