"I'm surprised there's not more kids partying upstairs tonight," police said Laureen McGlinchey told them when they raided her 211 Amesbury Road home Wednesday night.
According to police reports from that night, she told the officers she'd "rather have her son home than out somewhere doing that."
Police also said her son, Jon McGlinchey, 18, showed officers a stash of 500 Ecstasy pills during the raid.
"My son is a good boy," Laureen McGlinchey proclaimed outside a courtroom at Haverhill District Court yesterday, shortly after she, her son and her husband were arraigned on charges stemming from the Wednesday night raid.
Police searched James and Laureen McGlinchey's house after an investigation brought on by neighbors' complaints of teens coming and going from the house on weekends and large numbers of cars parked along the road.
At the time of the raid, Laureen McGlinchey told police they knew their son smoked marijuana, according to police reports.
In a second-floor game room, police found in clear view several bongs used for smoking marijuana and the 500 pills separated into two clear plastic bags. The police report also said there were full and empty beer bottles and plastic baggies with marijuana residue.
But police said Jon McGlinchey wasn't the only one with marijuana. According to police, his mother admitted she smokes "marijuana once in a while." In a first-floor office, police found an ashtray full of marijuana "roaches" she said belonged to her.
She also told police she had a bag of marijuana upstairs in her bedroom bureau. She tried to locate it for the officers but could not find it. She then called her daughter and asked in front of officers, "Hey honey, do you remember where I put the bag of weed I took to the Red Sox game the other night?"
"I could have smoked it already," Laureen McGlinchey then said, according to police reports.
Police arrested the parents and charged them with allowing a person under 21 to possess liquor, keeping a disorderly house and possession of drug paraphernalia. Laureen McGlinchey also was charged with possession of marijuana. Both were released on personal recognizance at their arraignments.
Jon McGlinchey was charged with trafficking in a class B substance (Ecstasy), being a minor in possession of alcohol and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on $1,000 cash bail and ordered to submit to random drug and alcohol testing until his next court date by Judge Stephen Abany.
Abany told Jon McGlinchey that if convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 21/2 years in a house of correction or up to 10 years in a state prison.
Police spokesman Sgt. John Arahovites said the arrests of James and Laureen McGlinchey should serve as a warning to all adults who allow or tolerate underage drinking.
"Teenagers don't understand the repercussions of drinking and driving, or taking drugs like Ecstasy," he said. "When we charge people like this, we're trying to avoid or minimize the chance of some kid getting seriously hurt or injured."
