Police: Woman is victim of identity theft

HAVERHILL - A woman told police someone opened a cell phone account in her name with T-Mobile and she found out about it only when a collection agency called to tell her she owed $370 for service between July and November of last year.

The victim told police this was the first time the collection agency had called her. She said the agency told her if the bill was not paid it would be put on her credit report.

Police said the agency refused to give the victim the phone numbers that were on the account, or whether her Social Security number was used to open the account. The victim has an account in good standing with T-Mobile now, police said. She said she paid the bill because she feared her credit rating would be adversely affected.

The incident was reported at 12:13 p.m. Monday, police said.
