---- — LAWRENCE — A 2-alarm fire burned over a couple of acres of woods on the south bank of the Merrimack River last night.

The fire was reported at around 5:30 and firefighters were at the scene for about two hours, according to Chief Jack Bergeron. A second alarm was sounded, which brought every available piece of apparatus in the city to Riverfront State Park.

Crews from Andover, Methuen and Lowell covered the stations while Lawrence firefighters suppressed the flames at the park, Bergeron said. The reinforcements put out a small brush fire on Ames Street, in the Tower Hill section of the city, the chief said.

The brush fire at Riverfront State Park did not cause any injuries or threaten anyone’s property, Bergeron said. The recent dry weather has been conducive to brush fires throughout Massachusetts, he noted.

“People should be very careful in disposing of cigarettes,” he said.
