Haverhill teacher charged in break in at ex's home

HAVERHILL — A woman who taught summer school at Haverhill High this year was arrested by police in Hampton, N.H. on burglary and stalking charges after she allegedly broke into the home of her ex-boyfriend at 2 Overlook St. in Hampton.

The resident told officers that he found a masked woman in his home and that she fled after he confronted her.

A short time later, officers found a woman walking in the area. The man identified her as Dawn Marie Thompson, 41, of Haverhill, and told police she was his ex-girlfriend. Thompson’s car was located on Winnacunnet Road in the area of Acadia Avenue, police said.

School Superintendent James Scully said Thompson worked with students in an English Language Learner program at Haverhill High School for five weeks this summer, for approximately four hours a day on a contract basis. He said the program ended at the beginning of this month.

“She went through the routine screening that all employees go through, and that includes background checks,” Scully said. “To the best of my knowledge, she was well liked and well received in the program.”

Scully said Thompson had not worked for the school system previously and she has not applied for a job in the school system.

Hampton officers had responded to 2 Overlook St. on at least six other occasions for various types of calls including criminal mischief, burglary and harassment, according to a press release from the department.

The victim in this case had recently moved to Hampton from York, Maine. Police in York are currently investigating a similar burglary at the previous residence of this same victim, according to Hampton police.

Hampton police spokesman Lt. Daniel Gidley said Thompson was transported to the Rockingham County Jail with a cash bail of $2,500, which her family posted for her release.

Thompson is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Aug. 28 at 8:30 a.m. in the 10th Circuit Court in Seabrook, N.H.
