METHUEN — State Police arrested a Lawrence man on drug and other charges after a brief chase on area highways Wednesday.
Edwin Jimenez, 31, of Lawrence, was charged with failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, possession of cocaine, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
A member of the State Police narcotics unit had tried to stop a vehicle earlier in Lawrence, said Sgt. Sean Murphy of the State Police public relations department, but that vehicle fled.
Because the trooper was in an unmarked cruiser, he immediately called off the pursuit and the suspect got away.
About 20 minutes later, a similar vehicle was seen by an officer in a marked State Police cruiser, which gave chase.
The chase lasted about 20 minutes, at different times traveling on 495, 93 and 213, before the vehicle was stopped on Route 213 in Methuen near the Howe Street exit.
Jimenez was arrested and the vehicle was searched and towed.
He was arraigned yesterday in Lawrence District Court.
District Attorney spokeswoman Carrie Kimball-Monahan said Jimenez has a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, meaning he will be held in Middleton Jail.
State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said troopers were trying to determine if Jimenez was the driver in the first chase or if they need to be looking for another person.
