Girl missing from home found quickly

NORTH ANDOVER — A 15-year-old girl wandered away from her Turtle Lane home last night about 7:30, prompting a search in the heavily wooded area off Salem Street by 15 local police and firefighters as well as a K-9 team from Andover.

The girl was found in good shape about an hour and a half later by rescue workers, who tracked her down on Granville Lane less than a mile away.

Sgt. Thomas McEvoy said the girl was fine but was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

“She’d been out in the cold, dressed in a light shirt, so they are looking at her for exposure or anything else,” he said.

McEvoy said the girl left the house abruptly, so her parents became worried and called police. Police scanner reports said the girl may have been suffering from emotional problems.

“We got the call and when any child is missing, we go right out,” he said. “The parents had talked to her, and all of a sudden, she was missing.”

A State Police helicopter was also called, but wasn’t needed once the girl was found.

McEvoy said police and fire worked very well together in the search.
