Transformer forces evacuation of commuter train in Lawrence

LAWRENCE - A transformer down across railroad tracks near the Valley Forum Ice Rink has forced the evacuation of a commuter rail train.

The passengers were on the last train headed for the Merrimack Valley before the MBTA shut down all service because of Hurricane Sandy.

The passengers were taken by bus to the Andover commuter rail station.

Brickstone Square in Andover, as well as others, are reporting power out in the area. It is unclear how many are affected at this time.

The winds are picking up in the area and several trees and wires are down throughout the area. Emergency officials are warning people to stay off the roads.

Lawrence Airport reported a 49 mph wind gusts at 1:54 p.m.
