At least six accidents on Interstate 93 kept state police and rescue crews busy on both sides of the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border this morning, and slowed the commute for many drivers.
The latest accident, about 9:15 a.m., resulted in a car fire that has backed up traffic on 93 South.
The first accident was called in around 4:30 a.m. on 93 in New Hampshire. According to New Hampshire State Police, a motorcyle was traveling north on the highway when it struck a deer.
Few details on the accident were available this morning, except that the accident did cause injury to the operator.
The next accident, also a motorcycle crash, came in about 5:37 a.m. In that case, Derek O'Donnell of Derry, N.H., crashed on I-93 South, just north of Dascomb Road. He was operating a 2000 Harley Davidson.
O'Donnell, who was alert at the scene, complained of back and neck pain and was taken to Lawrence General Hospital by Andover rescue, according to Andover police. He was still in the emergency room as of 8:40 this morning.
The next three accidents on 93 took place in New Hampshire:
— The first was on 93 North at Exit 4, 6:50 a.m.
— The next was on the southbound side, Exit 3, at 7:27 a.m.
— The last was northbound, north of the Windham scales, at 7:35 a.m.
New Hampshire State Police was unable to provide additional details about the accidents.
The latest accident, on 93 South in Andover, was caused when a car veered off the road and into signs on the side of the road. Injuries are minor, according to State Police, but traffic is major — backed up well past 495 to River Road.
Firefighters brought the fire under control by about 9:30 a.m. this morning. Rescue crews and State Police are on scene.
