Two dead in Methuen house fire

METHUEN - Two people are dead after an early morning house fire at 22 Buttonwood Drive.

The victims are a man and a woman in their 70s, police said. Their identities have not been released.

Police Officer Neil Quinlan on patrol at 3 a.m. discovered the house fire. The home was engulfed in flames, and the structure was destroyed.

One body has been removed from the home, with the second still inside as of 7 a.m., police said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Methuen fire and police and state Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, who was at the scene this morning.

Homes in the neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution, and the Red Cross was assisting.

Buttonwood Drive runs between Jackson and Prospect streets near Holy Family Hospital.
