Whittier Regional High open house is Sunday

HAVERHILL — Masonry students are busy fitting a slab of granite on the counter of an outdoor kitchen they built in the school lobby. Downstairs, graphics and design students are cranking out programs, posters and flyers. In the kitchen, culinary students are perfecting their pasta recipes.

It’s show time for Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High. Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., eighth graders and their parents in the Whittier district are invited to the school’s annual open house to see if a vocational-technical education is the choice for them. Whittier student guides will lead tours of the school’s 19 vocational-technical areas, where instructors and students will be available to answer questions.

The school lobby will be full of action, with culinary arts students carving fresh fruits and vegetables and preparing seasonal food demonstrations. The Freedom Shrine display, installed by the Breakfast Exchange Club of Greater Haverhill, features reproductions of documents from American history and will be part of a social studies display. Health and Wellness and World Languages will also host interactive displays, and 92.5 The River radio station will have a booth featuring DJ AJ Crozby, who will give away CDs, concert tickets and a chance to produce a show at The River’s studios.

Other scheduled events include:

Meet Superintendent William DeRosa: 1:30 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 3 p.m.

Title I informational session: 2 p.m.

Sports informational meeting: 3 p.m.

Choral performance by The Whittier Players: 2:30 p.m.

How to apply to Whittier: 1 to 4 p.m.

Prospective students and their parents may take home an application to Whittier, along with flyers made by design and visual students which describe each vocational-technical major. As they come down the driveway on Sunday, students and their parents can tune in to Whittier’s radio station at 89.3 FM and hear the open house show produced by journalism students.
