Lawrence police follow truck into cemetery for drug bust

Staff report
The Eagle-Tribune

---- — LAWRENCE — Officer Chad R. Lawlor was assigned to the Special Operations Division Wednesday morning when he noticed a Ford pickup truck with a bent New Hampshire license tag, dangling by just a screw, leave the parking lot of the CVS on Broadway.

The officer said he also observed the driver holding a hypodermic needle in hid left hand as he was holding the steering wheel. Lawlor and Detective David Moynihan followed the truck in their unmarked cruiser down Haverhill Street and then into St. Mary's Cemetery on Barker Street.

The cemetery is a common spot for people who want to ingest drugs in privacy. Police have made several drug arrests here in recent months. Police saw one of the men try to swallow something once they noticed they were under surveillance.

After arresting the two men, police found several needles on the seat of the pickup truck. They also seized several empty baggies with what they believed had heroin residue in them.

Edwin Lavallee, 28, of Dracut, was charged with possession of heroin.

Peter Shelzi, 27, of Tewksbury, was charged with possession of heroin and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
