Police capture Salem assault, theft suspect

By Doug Ireland

---- — SALEM — Police in Massachusetts have arrested a Concord man accused of assaulting and injuring a New Hampshire state trooper.

Sean McGurk, 42, of 61 Washington St., Apt. A, was captured shortly after noon today by Massachusetts State Police, according to New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Bryan Trask.

McGurk was wanted for assaulting Trooper James Powers, who thought McGurk's car had broken down Saturday night along Interstate 93 south in Salem. Powers stopped to help McGurk, but became suspicious after speaking to him.

The two then became involved in a physical altercation when McGurk tried to flee, Trask said.

Powers used a Taser and pepper spray on McGurk, but he managed to escape. Both men suffered minor injuries during the altercation, Trask said.

McGurk, who has an extensive criminal record, was taken to the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Newbury this afternoon and awaits arraignment, Trask said.

After McGurk escaped Saturday night, New Hampshire state troopers and Salem police followed his tracks to a nearby home, where he had stolen a vehicle and driven off.

The stolen vehicle was later found in Haverhill, Mass.
