Debate over stars spurs Londonderry stabbing

Daughter, 22, has been charged with wounding her father

LONDONDERRY — What began as a father and daughter’s quest to look at stars on Christmas Eve ended in a heated argument and the father being stabbed.

Nadja Svenson, 22, of Old Nashua Road was arrested on a felony second-degree assault charge about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after attacking her father, 49-year-old Robert Svenson, at the family’s home, police said.

Nadja Svenson suddenly plunged a kitchen knife into her father’s chest after they had a disagreement about stars in the sky, Londonderry police Detective Christopher Olson said yesterday.

“She and her father went outside to look at the stars and had an argument over where the constellations were,” Olson said.

Three Londonderry police officers and a sergeant responded to the home after receiving a call of a domestic dispute.

“As the officers made their way through the home, they found the father on the floor holding a homemade bandage to his chest,” Olson said.

Police questioned Robert Svenson and his wife, and were told Nadja Svenson was in an upstairs room, Olson said.

Robert Svenson, whose injuries were not life threatening, was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry for treatment, Olson said.

Police questioned the 22-year-old daughter and then placed her under arrest, Olson said.

“She said he accidentally ran into the knife,” Olson said.

Nadja Svenson, a 2009 Londonderry High School graduate, was held on $5,000 cash bail but later released. She is to appear in 10th Circuit Court in Derry on Jan. 2.

Second-degree assault is a Class B felony punishable by three and half to seven years in state prison.

A woman who answered the phone at the family’s home yesterday said Robert Svenson was recovering from his injuries but declined to comment further.
