Early morning fire in Methuen

METHUEN —Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at 20 Spruce St. early this morning.

The first crew arrived on scene around 1:16 a.m., finding the occupants — a man, woman and 13-month-old child — on the pitched roof of a porch at the front of the two-story house.

Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Fragala said firefighters could barely see the people on the roof, through the thick, dark smoke pouring out of the house when they arrived.

"They were buried in the smoke," he said.

The fire crew was able to get the family down safely with a ladder. The woman and child were taken to Holy Family Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. The man did not need treatment.

Firefighters put out the fire in an hour. The blaze caused heavy damage to the house, which Fragala said was a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Lawrence and Salem fire departments provided mutual aid during the emergency.
