Masked robbers strike twice on snowy night

LAWRENCE — A pair of armed men — one described as tall and the other short — allegedly pulled off two robberies within a half hour last night — on night when the city was clearing up after a snow storm.

At around 8 p.m., police responded to a report of a shot fired at 576 Haverhill St., where they later recovered a .45 caliber casing. Two people shoveling snow were robbed at gunpoint and one of the masked men fired his gun in the air, according to Lawrence police.

Within a half hour, police were investigating a holdup of Hamel’s Liquors at 678 Haverhill St. Two men with gray masks were reported leaving the scene. Among items stolen were three bottles of Hennessey, an expensive cognac, police said.

At that point, Lawrence police alerted Methuen police, because the suspect’s car may be headed to that scene. But police said they didn’t get a positive description of the car or the license plate. A be-on-the-lookout bulletin was broadcast for an older model, dark Toyota that was seen in the area.

Methuen police turned up at the scene to investigate because they believe the same suspects who pulled off last night’s holdups may have been involved in the Sunday night robbery of the All-American Gas station just a couple of hundred yards away from Hamel’s

The suspects, one stocky, 6-foot-1 and brandishing a black and silver handgun believed to be a semi-automatic, the other, 5-foot-3, thin and wielding a 6- to 8-inch folding knife, entered the gas station and stole $300 and cigarettes from a gas station clerk, police said.
