UPDATE: Paraglider dies after plunge off Plum Island

NEWBURYPORT — A 49-year-old Rhode Island man who was pulled from the water by a Coast Guard rescue boat this afternoon following a paragliding accident off the coast of Plum Island has died.

"He was pronounced dead at 6:30," Newburyport Police Lt. Richard Siemasko said.

"He never regained consciousness," he said.

Witnesses said he crashed into the water about 50 yards from shore.

Siemasko said the man's two friends attempted to go into the water to save him but retreated because of the cold.

"They had to be treated for exposure at the scene and were released," Siemasko said.

"The water is 35 degrees. You only have three or four minutes in cold water like that before you succumb. You have very little time when the water is cold like that," he said.

Cause of death remained under investigation.
