METHUEN — A 25-year-old man shot himself to death after an argument with a former girlfriend late Saturday night, police said.
The shooting happened in a driveway on Morrison Court, a short residential street near Broadway. Witnesses reported hearing screams and someone yelling, “He shot himself!” police said.
The victim, who has not been identified pending notification of his next of kin, had a gunshot wound in the head. Officers found him lying on the ground with a semiautomatic weapon nearby, police said.
Fire Department emergency medical technicians pronounced him dead at the scene.
Witnesses said the man and woman were arguing outside a house, police said. The woman walked back into the house and then the gun was fired, neighbors told police.
A child could be heard crying, according to police.
Chief Joseph Solomon said officers assured Morrison Court residents that the shooting was “an isolated incident” and that they were not endangered.
The shooting was reported to police at 11:22 p.m. Neighbors who called The Eagle-Tribune a few minutes later reported hearing a gunshot, then screams.
By midnight, marked and unmarked police cruisers lined Morrison Court, which is off of Park Street. The street was blocked to traffic.
The incident remains under investigation.
