---- — DERRY — A rollover on Interstate 93 north yesterday morning snarled traffic and sent a Derry woman to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.

Nancy McAvoy, 65, was driving a 2003 Honda Civic north when she lost control of her car at mile marker 9.4 at 10:30 yesterday morning, according to police.

“At the last minute, she had to apply her brakes to avoid the building traffic,” New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Paul Hunt said.

The car went into a skid, then off the left side of the road, striking several trees. McAvoy was the only person in the vehicle.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, McAvoy was unconscious. She was wearing a seat belt and Derry firefighters had to remove her from the car.

“She did regain consciousness and was coherent and talking at the scene,” Hunt said.

McAvoy first was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, then flown by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. A hospital spokeswoman said McAvoy’s condition was unavailable yesterday evening.

Hunt said that speed was likely a primary cause, but the accident remains under investigation.

“We did not get to conduct a long interview with her,” Hunt said. “Until we do that, we can’t really determine much.”

Hunt said he did not know if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The vehicle was destroyed in the crash and was towed away from the scene shortly after.the accident

The left lane of the highway was closed for just more than an hour following the accident. Traffic was backed up for about three miles, from the weigh station north. Motorists were seen using the emergency access road to change directions to avoid sitting in traffic.

This crash is under investigation by Trooper James Powers of New Hampshire State Police Troop B. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Powers at 223-4381.
