Police search for Newton bank robbery suspect

NEWTON — Authorities are looking for a man on a mountain bike who held up Merrimac Savings Bank.

The robbery at the South Main Street bank was reported shortly before 9:30 when a man pulled up on a green bike and passed a note to a teller, demanding money, Newton police Chief Lawrence Streeter said.

No weapon was shown, and a clerk followed the robber's demands, putting an undisclosed amount of money in an envelope, according to Streeter, whose wife, Cindy, was one of three employees inside the bank. She called him on her cell phone to report the robbery, he said.

No one was injured, just shaken up, Streeter said. There were no customers at the time.

The man, wearing a blue sweater and believed to be about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build, then fled on the bike down South Main Street, Streeter said.

The robber's face was covered by glasses and a red New England Patriots cap pulled down over his face, Streeter said.

Police officers and members of the Rockingham County sheriff's office searched along side roads in town, but to no avail. A preschool behind the bank was locked down while police investigated.

The bank's drive-through was reopened shortly after the robbery, but the rest of the bank remained closed.
