Salem police issued a "be on the lookout" bulletin for a brown 1999 Toyota Camry just after 11 a.m. Salem State officials sent out a campus-wide bulletin alerting the university of the incident at 11:46 a.m.
The bus driver was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries. The female victim declined to be taken to the hospital and will be OK, Cady said.
It is unknown if the suspect is a SSU student, Cady said. People do not have to show any type of student identification to ride the shuttle buses, which run a loop between Salem State's north, south and central campuses.
"He could have just boarded one of the buses (without being a student)," Cady said.
The suspect is described as a white male with long red/ blonde hair, some facial hair, approximately 20 years old, wearing a white shirt, gray baseball cap, khaki pants and red sneakers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Salem State University Police at 978-542-6111 or anonymously at 978-542-TIPS (8477).
The bus driver is an employee of Cavalier Bus Lines, and is not employed directly by SSU, Cady said.
