Police, FBI arrest Methuen man on several gun charges

METHUEN — City police detectives, assisted by federal agents, arrested a 24-year-old Methuen man yesterday on several gun charges.

Jad Ali Mokad was being held overnight at the Methuen Police Station pending his arraignment Monday in Lawrence District Court. He was charged with two counts of possession of a large capacity feeding device and one count of an unsecured firearm.

He faces two and a half to 10 years in state prison if convicted for possession of the illegal weapons device. Punishment for the unsecured firearm carries a one- to 10-year prison sentence and a fine of $1,000 to $10,000.

“This investigation was an excellent example of local and federal law enforcement officers working together to make our community safer,” Methuen police Chief Joseph Solomon said.

“The agents, officers and detectives did an excellent job of following a tip and developing information through investigation to a rapid conclusion resulting in an arrest and seizure of weapons and high-capacity magazines,” the chief said.

Agents from the federal ATF and Department of Homeland Security both received tips about the high-capacity magazines. The agents later contacted Methuen police, who joined in the investigation along with the FBI.

Police seized an AK-47 rifle variant described as a “WASR-10” with two 30-round banana clip magazines with 7.62-caliber rounds, a M&P-15 rifle with .223-caliber rounds and magazines, and a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum revolver with .357-caliber rounds, according to police.

“He was licensed to carry the two rifles, but not the high-capacity magazines,” Solomon said. “There were children in the house where there was an unsecured handgun.’’

Federal agents and police are continuing their investigation, which could lead to additional charges.
