Man arrested on child rape charges

ANDOVER — Police arrested a man at a local hotel yesterday afternoon on charges of aggravated statutory rape and enticement of a child.

Andrew J. Whittaker, 49, of Norwell was being held at the Andover police station last night on $15,000 cash bail. He is due to be arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court.

Police arrested Whittaker shortly before 1 p.m. as a result of an investigation by Detective Kevin Aufiero of previous information that Whittaker had an inappropriate encounter with a child on Sept. 26 at an Andover hotel.

During the investigation, Aufiero determined that Whittaker was the same man who met with the child and had continued to keep in contact after the encounter.

This continued communication led Whittaker to return to Andover for another encounter, leading to his arrest. Police would not identify the hotel.

Police said they became aware of Whittaker when a family member contacted the department about the inappropriate relationship. The child is believed to be under the age of 16. Police would not say if the child was male or female.
